Manchester Community College

East Hartford Public Schools

Naugatuck Valley Community College

Waterbury Public Schools

Through these local alliances, students from high need areas of Connecticut will gain early college awareness and support activities such as tutoring, mentoring, academic preparation, financial education and college scholarships to improve access to higher education for low income, minority and disadvantaged first-generation students, and those families that will be served.

The Connecticut GEAR UP Alliance began in 2012 serving both 6th and 7th graders at target middle schools in Waterbury and 7th graders only at the target middle schools in East Hartford and New Haven. GEAR UP CT uses a cohort approach in serving students and families within each local district and partner college.

GEAR UP CT Alliance will create foundational supports and services through each partner district-college by increasing academic tutoring, out-of-school-time academic enrichment programs, SAT prep programs, mentoring, STEM work-based learning, social-emotional resilience-building interventions, family engagement, financial aid workshops, and college awareness.

Through specific services in the GEAR UP initiative, participating students will be provided PSAT & SAT boot camps as well as professional development for the teachers and parents (college planning information workshops).

Through the Porco Foundation, GEAR UP CT will work with each partner in developing a resilience intervention model that supports participating students and their families to prevent suicide, promote mental health, and create a message of hope for young adults. By providing engaging and uplifting programming that will emphasize peer-to-peer messaging as well as promote help seeking behavior, self-care, and coping skills. Porco Foundation programs challenge stigma by talking openly about mental health, and educating about the risk factors and warning signs of suicide and other related mental health concerns.
