John H. Motley
John H. Motley is the co-founder of MotleyBeup— a nonprofit consulting firm in Hartford that helps strengthen the capacity of nonprofits to achieve their goals and fulfill their missions. For nearly two decades, Motley has been a leader in the nonprofit community in Connecticut. Motley was appointed to the CSUS Board in 2004 and most recently reappointed in 2007.

Motley was president of the St. Paul Travelers Foundation and was previously the company’s senior vice president and chief of staff of Claim Services. He joined Travelers in 1988 as executive vice president of its real estate subsidiary and held senior leadership positions in investment policy, loan restructuring and lending. He previously worked at Chemical Bank in New York, where he was managing director in the real estate group.

Motley is a past president of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art and a corporator of Hartford Hospital, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center and the Hartford Public Library. He is a past president of the Amistad Foundation, the Neighborhoods of Hartford and the Hartford Economic Development Corporation. Motley is the immediate past chairman of the board of the American Civil War Center in Richmond, Va., and is presently chairman of the Hartford School Builders Committee.

Motley graduated from the U.S. Army’s Officer Candidate School at Ft. Benning, Ga., and is a decorated Vietnam veteran. A resident of Hartford, Motley also holds a law degree from DePaul University.

His current term ends June 30, 2013.
