Veterans Services

Veterans Services Veterans and active military members receiving their education at Central, Eastern, Southern and Western - the universities of the Connecticut State University System - are a valued and vital component of our campus communities.

We recognize and honor their sacrifices and value their life experiences as they broaden the diversity of our staff, faculty and student body. We also recognize their special circumstances and the need for the universities to assist them in making the successful transition into the campus environment.

Tuition and Course Fees

Under state law, the Connecticut Tuition Waiver for Veterans at the CSUS universities covers 100% of tuition for matriculated students (Fall and Spring semesters). If a Veteran has elected to receive benefits under the Federal Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008 (Post 9/11 GI Bill), these are applied first, and the tuition waiver pays the balance. Under Board of Trustees policy, 50% of course fees are waived for Veterans who are matriculated students, for courses taken that count toward your degree during summer and intercession. In the case of Veterans receiving benefits under the Post 9/11 GI Bill, this waiver again pays the balance. The waivers do not cover the various fees that are charged to the student. The student is responsible for other charges such as for books, student activity, parking, and room and board.

Connecticut Veterans Waiver requirements include:
  • 90 days active duty (active duty for training not applicable).
  • Honorable discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces.
  • Copy of Member-4 of DD-214 (with required dates of service).
  • Be a matriculated student (officially accepted to the University through the Office of Recruitment and Admissions). Eligibility ceases upon withdrawal, dismissal, and/or graduation.
  • If you are an out of state student, you must have a CT domicile (address) at the time of acceptance to the university
The Post-9/11 GI Bill funds tuition and fees for eligible veterans up to the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition and required fees. For Connecticut, this amount for FY2009 is $486.00 per credit hour for tuition and $1,946.00 per term for required fees. A student?s tuition and fees could exceed these maximums depending on the program in which they are enrolled or their residency status (in-state versus out-of-state student). In the case of CSUS, the only instances in which a veteran would exceed these maximum tuition and fee assistance amounts would be in the case of graduate tuition for an out-of-state student, and required fees for an out-of-state undergraduate or graduate student.

Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program

The Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program is a provision of the Post-9/11 GI Bill. This program allows colleges and universities to voluntarily enter into an agreement with the VA to fund tuition expenses that exceed the GI Bill?s maximum tuition and fee rate. The institution can contribute up to 50% of those expenses and the VA will match the same amount as the institution. Institutions that voluntarily enter into a Yellow Ribbon Agreement with the VA choose the maximum amount of tuition and fees that will be contributed. The VA will match that amount and issue payment directly to the institution.

The four CSUS universities have each entered into a Yellow Ribbon Agreement with the VA. The recommended maximum number of individuals for whom the Yellow Ribbon Waiver will be authorized is 50 each for CCSU and SCSU, and 25 each for ECSU and WCSU, on a first-come, first-served basis. CSUS is proud to provide this additional benefit to our veterans.

National Guard

Under state law, matriculated students who are in the National Guard receive a 100% waiver of tuition (Fall and Spring semesters). Out-of-state students who enroll in the Connecticut National Guard also receive this waiver. No fees are waived. Course fees are NOT waived for students attending in summer or intercession.

Benefits & Assistance

Each of the universities have staff members specifically designated to provide support for veterans and military members attending classes. The mission is to assist veterans, guardsmen, and reservists in taking full advantage of the educational benefits available to them -- and to assist individuals in making the transition from active military duty to the CSUS universities or from our universities to active military duty.

Whether you are a new student who has completed your service, a student who has interrupted your education to serve and are now returning, or a student who began your studies elsewhere and are transferring to Central, Eastern, Southern or Western, we welcome the opportunity to guide you to the resources you need to make the most of your university experience.

In addition, each university has designated a drop-in location for veterans to gather in a causal setting to informally make connections with other veterans currently enrolled as university students.

The university staff provide a key point of contact for program information and counseling for the veteran/military community at Central, Eastern, Southern and Western, respectively, while developing and maintaining productive relations with local off-campus organizations and programs serving veterans.

Veterans Offices

Each of the universities has a Veterans Office devoted to providing support for veterans and military members attending classes. The mission is to assist veterans, guardsmen, and reservists in taking full advantage of the educational benefits available to them and help make the transition from active military duty to the CSUS universities, and from our universities to active military duty.
