A Message from the President

Board of Regents Interim President Philip E. Austin Dear Colleagues,

Since my last note, much has transpired, both at the Board of Regents and in our state. Like you, I was horrified by the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School. While a tragedy of that magnitude touches us all, the Board of Regents/Connecticut State Colleges & Universities family was particularly impacted. Several of the slain teachers and administrators were Connecticut State University alumna, and two employees lost their daughter that day. By all accounts these were heroic staff members and beautiful, inspiring children. It's important that all of us honor their memory and contributions.

I'm pleased to report that the search for the next president of the Board of Regents is underway. A Regents' Search Committee and Systemwide Advisory Committee were formed and have met to discuss this critical task. Importantly, this search process will involve campus leaders, faculty, staff, students, union representatives and members of local industry. The Board of Regents hopes to recommend a candidate to the Governor during the month of April, and have that candidate begin over the summer.

In our ongoing effort to increase transparency and information coming from the system office, I'd like to mention two new ways to keep up-to-date with Board of Regents meetings and other news. By registering your email at the top of this page, you will receive Board of Regents meeting and subcommittee meeting notifications as soon as they're posted online. We're a public board, and it's important that people understand the work we do and how we do it. In addition, we've recently launched a Twitter page. If you're on Twitter, please follow us at @ConnSCU to get the latest news from the system office and our campuses.

The next few months will not be easy ones. As we get a better picture of the state's fiscal situation, and how that may impact our colleges and universities, I will be sure to share that information with you. I appreciate the time you've taken to inform me of the exciting and interesting work happening on our campuses. That, and the success of our students, continue to be our top priorities.

Sincerely,

Philip E. Austin
Interim President
Board of Regents for Higher Education
Connecticut State Colleges & Universities
