Slumming in New York

by Robert M. Dowling
Central Connecticut State University

Robert M. Dowling, associate professor at Central, published a study of literary writings that transformed New York City’s moral threats into cultural treasures. His book explores neighborhood cultures and life in New York City from 1880 to 1930. Slumming in New York samples a number of New York “slumming” narratives to depict the relationship between writing and culture in New York. He used ethnicity theory methods, regional studies, literary studies, and popular culture to show how writers had a part in improving New York’s social problems by uncovering truth about poor neighborhoods.
