Out of the Attic: Inventing Antiques in Twentieth-Century New England

by Briann G. Greenfield
Central Connecticut State University

Antiques simply aren’t what they used to be. A new book by Briann G. Greenfield, associate professor of history at Central Connecticut State University, looks at the transformation of antiques from family heirlooms to valuable artistic objects. Published in hard cover and a 265-page paperback volume, Out of the Attic: Inventing Antiques in Twentieth-Century New England, considers the establishment of a retail structure for the buying and selling of antiques, examining the role of collectors, dealers and museum makers in the development of a new tradition based on the aesthetic qualities of early-American furnishings. Greenfield, who is coordinator of the public history program at Central, has given presentations at various venues on American culture, both in Connecticut and beyond.
