Global Perspectives in the Geography Curriculum: Reviewing the Moral Case for Geography
Western Connecticut State University
There has been a shift in geography education from teaching students about national issues to concentrating on the students themselves and what they perceive their place to be in the world. In Global Perspectives in the Geography Curriculum: Reviewing the Moral Case for Geography, Alex Standish, Western assistant professor of geography who was educated in the United Kingdom and later in the United States, focuses on the rise of “global ethics” in the curriculum. He cautions that “few have stopped to ask” if the changes “enhance or hinder the education of young people.” The concern is that not enough time is spent learning about where things are and why they are there. In recent years, national surveys have highlighted the lack of geographic awareness among U.S. residents. The book was written primarily for teachers, students of geography education, academic geographers who are training teachers and subject leaders.
